PEAK PERFORMANCE by Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness

Authors: Brad Stulberg is former McKinsey consultant who writes about health and the science of human performance in Outside and New York magazines, and Steve Magness is the coach of some of the top distance runners in the world, having coached numerous athletes to impressive performances in world championships and Olympic Games.

Book: "Peak Performance" is a combination of inspiring stories of top performers across a range of capabilities (from athletic to intellectual or artistic) and the latest scientific insights into the cognitive and neurochemical factors that drive performance in all domains. The authors explore the importance of mindset, stress management, rest and recovery, deliberate practice, and physical conditioning as key topics discussed to achieve peak performance. In each chapter, they provide practical strategies and principles that readers can apply to enhance their performance and reach their full potential.

Opinion: I believe this book is excellent for those who want to improve their lives but may be new to sports sciences, neuroscience, and related fields. As someone who was new to these subjects when I read it, the book was revelatory and had a profound impact on me. What I appreciated most was how the authors seamlessly combined insights for both mental and physical performance. In today's world, the division between mental and physical performance is more pronounced than ever, with many brilliant minds lacking physical fitness and many warriors lacking intellectual prowess. In my opinion, the mind and physique must go hand in hand, and this book convincingly shows how and why. Lastly, if there is one key insight to take from this book, it is the equation: Stress + Rest = Growth. This formula applies to all aspects of life and represents the essence of peak performance. Unfortunately, it seems that many fail to grasp this concept in both directions.
